If It Happens In Real Life, It Happens On Desperate Housewives: Palin Says Daughter, 17, Is Pregnant...All to Squelch Rumors That Veep, Like Bree...

...was pretending that her daughter's baby, born in April, was actually her own.

OK, now that I've filled your minds with sensationalist tabloid rumors, here's the story according to AOL News:

John McCain's running mate Sarah Palin said Monday that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is five months pregnant, an announcement campaign aides said was aimed at rebutting Internet rumors that Palin's youngest son, born in April, was actually her daughter's. A statement released by the campaign said that Bristol Palin will keep her baby and marry the child's father. Bristol Palin's baby is due in late December.

"Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We're proud of Bristol's decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents," Sarah and Todd Palin said in the brief statement.

The disclosure of the pregnancy came on the opening day of the Republican National Convention, scaled back because of Hurricane Gustav, and three days after McCain named Palin as his running mate. The other news was likely to overshadow the disclosure.

The first-term Alaska governor was in Minnesota preparing for her acceptance speech when the campaign issued the statement; her family was home in Alaska. "Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family," they added.

Lucky for all the Palins, the baby's father is not also Bristol's father, as her mother's point of view is that children born of incest still have the right to life.

P.S. -- Though you'll rarely find Roxy waxing political, lest this post cause you to mistake my political leanings, when my kids leave their toys, bikes and trash out on the front lawn, I tell them to "please put it away and stop acting like the Clintons." Looking forward to those calls from London's second grade teacher around election time.

I'm kinda cracking up over how FAST the media has gone into "Dig Up Dirt" mode on Ms. Palin. I suppose they (the media) have a lot of time to make up for! It's crazy though ... I'd never heard of her before and now there is SO MUCH out there about her (true or false).

There are people who think babies born from incest shouldn't live? That's sad ... it's not their fault their parents are freaky deeks. ;)

Great post. You handled the serious issue in your deftly amusing way as usual.

While I was really excited about what Sarah Palin represented--a chance to shake up Washington and reach across both sides of the aisle and actually governing for a change and getting work done--it appears that she may not be the woman the Republican surrogates are touting her to be after all.

I don't like any of my choices in this election, as usual. Unfortunately. And I'm still waiting for the day when a real leader will emerge that can inspire all of us, not just one party, and actually unite this country the way Bush pledged to do, but in which he has failed miserably.

As I've posted on the blogs of others, it's amazing that Gustav is able to override anything--the Republican convention, the news of Bristol's pregnancy, just everything. Why does it take a Hurricane to united this country? Why can't we all work for the same goals instead of fighting each other on every tiny little detail when there are clear skies?

What I want out of my leaders first and foremost is leadership--qualities that will get all of us as a nation working together instead of being pitted against each other along the battle lines of special interests, personal issues, and the "color" of the state I inhabit.

China, for better or for worse using lots of rights repression, united its people to pull off an awesome Olympic Games. That they had to squelch free speech and continually to repress their people to do it reflects poorly on them. But at the same time what reflects well is that their people believed those repressions were okay because it was MORE Important to put on a great show for the world.

Just think of what our nation could accomplish if we could put aside, for only a short while, all of our petty little differences and actually work for the same goals?

President Kennedy promised to put a man on the moon by the end of the 60s, and the American People did it.

Why can't our President, whoever he or she is, come up with a 3 part mission instead of a party platform?

Something like:
1. Secure peace in the middle east once and for all and put the entire weight of the US foreign policy and economic engine on Israel, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebenon and Palestine.

2. Become energy self-sufficient by 2015 by a combination of clean fossil fuel technologies, alternatives to fossil fuels, solar, wind and geothermal power, hydrogen fuel cells, water batteries and any optimal mix of this technology while we search for and drill in environmentally sustainable ways our untapped reserves?

3. Solve the Health Care issue once and for all with a combination of legal reform that prevents outrageous lawsuits, outrageous settlements and jury awards, and encourages our doctors to perform unnecessary tests just to cover their own behinds while at the same time cracking down hard on bad doctors and poor health practices by our citizens that actually run up medical costs because of our unhealthy lifestyles devoted to fast food and junk food and lack of exercise which foster obesity and diabetes and heart disease and all the associated medical costs that go along with then?

When will a politician get up and challenge the American people to work together on these major issues rather than continue to play the American people off of each other for their own political gain and their own reelection?

Business as usual in Washington has to end.

And for God's sake, no other country in the world helps us out when a hurricane destroys our cities or an earthquake destroys our cities, or a flood destroys our cities or fire or mudslides or anything else. I am NOT an isolationist, but darn it all, why do we continue to pour billions of dollars into other countries' pockets to bail them out when we can't help our own people?

When will a politician in America get up and say these things? The day that one does, is the day that America will recapture its greatness.

Cheers!

I think the decision to accept the nomination by Governor Palin must call into question her judgment. She had to have known that this issue would become public thereby subjecting her pregnant, unwed, high school daughter to intense media scrutiny during an obviously already traumatic time. This does not seem to show the governor looking out for her daughter nor family's best interest but her own political aspirations instead.

I would think it would be a bit difficult for a Governor to fake a pregnancy and birth, but I'm *so glad* she is endorsing premarital sex of minors.
