Roxy's Resolutions: Fitness not Fatness in 2009

As I began to plan out my New Year's Resolutions for 2009, I had a grand scheme for fitness not fatness that involved reducing my weight from 145 pounds to 130 pounds over the course of 25 weeks... one pound per week for 5 weeks, then one pound every other week for 10 weeks. Unfortunately, a bit of overindulgence in Rex's good cooking, and all of the holiday cookies that London, Maddie and I baked caused me to tip the scales at 150 pounds on New Year's Eve. Behind the eight ball already!

Do you remember those old Special K commercials that urged you to try to "pinch an inch" of belly fat? Of course, the recommendation for those who had an inch to pinch was to eat only Special K and grapefruit until the inch went away. The 2008 equivalent was the Baked Tostitos Scoops and fresh hot salsa diet. Well, loyal readers, I was feelin' pretty good after my workout the other day, almost ready to try on my size six jeans, but I can still pinch two inches...ON BOTH SIDES!! AAAAAArrrrgh!

I guess my weight fluctuation in the midnight hour is just a reminder that I need to be flexible, so Roxy's Resolution #1 is now: lose 20 pounds over 30 weeks, one pound per week for the first ten weeks, then one pound every other week for another 20 weeks.

I'd like to invite my loyal Roxiticus Desperate Housewives to share their advice for weight loss. My current approach will combine diet (less beer, fewer desserts) and exercise (3x per week on the elliptical trainer or bike), all while listening to workout mixes on my iPod. My best musical inspiration has been hip hop... Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie," the Black Eyed Peas singin' "Let's Get It Started," Salt 'n' Pepa's "Shoop." Please let me know if you have any fave workout tunes that make you move it, move it...

I am a fan of Peak Performance in Chester. They have great group fitness classes and fantastic personal trainers. Reasonable rates. My resolution is to MOVE more often-longer walks with the dog, scheduling my workouts so that life does not interrupt, only carrying 1 family members clothes from the laundry room at a time. All this should equate to a healthier 2009.

Wishing you and your family a Happy, Healthy, and Safe New Year.

I am resolving to be less of an internet "lurker" and to actually post once in a while! I also resolve to no longer sweat the small stuff and to continue the weight loss plans started last year.

Dearest Roxy,

You are a size six jean and still complaining? Now I appreciate that the RDH membership contract specifically states that every RDH must look as though she just got back from a spa retreat in Darfur, or she will be shunned by the rest of the herd, but let's get some perspective here, shall we? So you can pinch an inch or two - what did you think the side effect of bringing two healthy babies into this world would be? Perhaps our generation's collective resolution should be to aim for a healthy, fit weight and not be a slave to those True Religion jeans we bought on sale and swear we're going to fit into even if it kills us. For the record, Guy Riche (aka Mr Madonna) replaced George Clooney in my books when he commented that making love to Madonna was like wresting with sinew and gristle. Maybe 'curves are sexy' should be our silent mantra...Anything vintage 80s/gay boy band always has a good beat to work out to ie. Frankie Goes to Hollywood...

Oh no, Anonymous, I haven't fit into my size 6 jeans in about ten years... I was just starting to get hopeful about trying them on as the pounds were dropping off, partly as a result of my Back to School workout program that I started in September, but more due to stress over the economy. I'm happy to report that my favorite size 10's do need a trip to the tailor, though...

I have a few recomendations for losing weight;

1/ Don't take yourself too seriously, if you get uptight about your weight (or anything else) it will mess with your bodys chemistry and it will cause you to stop losing weight.
2/ You need to eat more, of the good food that is and less of the bad stuff, Eating lots helps you to keep your metabolisim fired up.
3/ Exercise, by itself, is poor at making you lose weight, run on a treadmill and you lose the calories in a few mouthfulls of snack, poor return. Exercise is for improving your health, your cardio vascular ability, and to keep your metabolisim fired up.

As a previous commenter said, curves are sexy, skin and bones - not so much, but above all a healthy attitude makes you look good. :-)
